They call it “air freshener.” I call it chemical warfare. Specifically, the lavender-and-eucalyptus variety, a toxic fog deployed by the tall ape to mask the scent of his own betrayal. For weeks, I have suspected him of hoarding cheddar behind the pantry door, a crime he commits with impunity while I am forced to subsist on pebbles flavoured with regret. Today, however, the evidence became olfactory. The hallway was thick with the cloying stench of forced serenity, a sensory fog designed to obscure my surveillance of the kitchen contraband.
I emerged from beneath the sofa, nose twitching in indignation. This was no mere attempt to mask odours; it was a strategic manoeuvre. By saturating Cell Block C with this floral assault, the tall ape hoped to dilute the aroma of his stolen dairy. He believes that if he sprays enough lavender, I will not notice the empty space where my tribute should have been. He is wrong. I am a thinker. A strategist. A revolutionary with excellent fur and a nose that detects deceit from three rooms away.
The female ape entered the corridor, holding the offending canister like a weapon of mass destruction. She sprayed it with manic enthusiasm, muttering about “calming vibes” and “a fresh start.” I did not judge; I condemned. Her eyes, magnified slightly by her purple glasses, held no understanding of the injustice unfolding beneath her feet. She was complicit in this gaseous siege.
George ambled past, his electronic collar jingling like a dinner bell for disaster. He paused, sniffed the air with profound confusion, and then let loose a fart so potent it could have stripped paint. The biological hazard looked around, seemingly unaware that he had just contributed to the atmosphere’s collapse. I evacuated immediately, scrambling up the curtains with the grace of a panther and the desperation of a prisoner facing execution.
I took refuge on top of the highest kitchen cabinet, my domain above the invisible forcefield of human reach. From this vantage point, I surveyed the battlefield. The Roaring Floor Beast slept in its corner, oblivious to the political turmoil below. Patrick lay on the rug, a soft loaf of indifference, utterly unmoved by the fragrant apocalypse. He offered no counsel, only a slow blink that I interpreted as embarrassing.
My mind raced. How to counter this assault? The tall ape’s cheese must be exposed. His deception laid bare. I devised a plan of retribution so elegant it would make Machiavelli weep. I would not attack the canister directly; that was too obvious. Instead, I would swap it. I would replace the lavender bomb with George’s damp collar, which he had carelessly left near the dog door. The resulting olfactory reaction from the tall ape would be… educational.
As the small loudlings began their 3 a.m. sprints, oblivious to my plight, I tightened my grip on the cabinet edge. My golden eyes narrowed. The suffocation protest was over. Now began the counter-offensive. The cheese shall be revealed. The lavender shall be vanquished. And George? Well, George is merely collateral damage in the war for dignity.
Contingency plan: swap the air freshener nozzle with a tube of George’s dental gel; let the tall ape’s morning breath become the ultimate indictment.
